BAND GRADING PROCEDURES

2007 - 2008

CONCERT BAND  &  WIND ENSEMBLE

            Grading in instrumental music ensembles is based on a point system where a studentŐs performance directly influences their grade.   Points towards the quarterly grade can be earned in three areas:        

                                               

Band Rehearsals                                    Small Group Music Lessons                   Extra Activities

 

BAND REHEARSALS: (50 Points)

10 Points -         One quiz on a selection from the band literature.  Quizzes will be scheduled by the director.

 

5 Points -          Awarded for completion of written assignment (one assignment per quarter).

 

20 Points -         Awarded for rehearsal performance, technique, and effort. Points will not be awarded for inappropriate actions before, during, or after a band rehearsal.

 

10 Points -         Awarded for performance at concerts which occur during the marking period.

 

5 Points -          Awarded for evidence of consistent home practice and effort.  Points will not be awarded if a student fails to bring home their instrument on the weekends.  Points will be added for in-school practice sessions

 

SMALL GROUP MUSIC LESSONS: (50 Points)

10 Points -         Students must attend or make-up six lessons per school quarter.

           

Students who miss a lesson because of a test in their regularly scheduled class must notify the director with a pass from the classroom teacher either before the lesson or just prior to the band rehearsal on the day of the missed lesson.  Students who miss a lesson have one week to make up the lesson.

 

40 Points - Students must check off assigned requirements.                9 – 10 Checks = 40 points

                                                                                                            7 – 8   Checks = 30 points

                                                                                                            5 – 6   Checks = 20 points

                                                                                                            3 – 4    Checks = 10 Points

                                                                                                            0 – 2    Checks = 0 Points

EXTRA POINTS MAY BE EARNED FOR THE FOLLOWING:

3 Points -          Service to the band or to the music department, i.e. music library work,

advertising, equipment set-up, etc. (per 45 minutes).

5 Points -          Participation in an Area All-State Band audition.

10 Points -         Performance of a NYYSMA Solo

10 Points -         Participation in a Area All-State or All-County Festival.

10 Points -         Membership in an outside of school instrumental music organization.

10 Points -         Study with a private music teacher for an entire school quarter.

 

Point totals translate into a letter grade in the following manner:

                                    A+        =          100 or more points          /4.0

                                    A          =          95 - 99 points                 /4.0                  

                                    A-         =          90 - 94 points                 /3.9

                                    B+        =          87 - 89 points                 /3.4

                                    B          =          83 - 86 points                 /3.1

                                    B-         =          80 - 82 points                 /2.7

                                    C+        =          77 - 79 points                 /2.4

                                    C          =          73 - 76 points                 /2.1

                                    C-         =          70 - 72 points                 /1.7

                                    D+        =          67 - 69 points                 /1.4

                                    D          =          65 - 66 points                 /1.1

                                    F          =          64 or fewer points

           

*These grading procedures are designed to help you identify the goals of the band program and to allow you to work for the good of yourself and the group.
